Our Partial Hospitalization Program offers an intensive and comprehensive approach to mental health care in a structured and supportive setting. These programs are ideal for individuals who need more guidance than what traditional outpatient therapy provides but do not require the intensity of an inpatient hospitalization. In our psychiatric day treatment program, teenagers benefit from intensive psychotherapy alongside other evidence-based treatments.

Conditions We Address

Adolescents may experience a wide range of emotional, social, and behavioral challenges, including general and social anxiety, depression, mood dysregulation, feelings of isolation, acute stress, life transitions and adjustments, school avoidance, and sleep difficulties. Counseling can also help address many of the everyday issues teens face, such as navigating friendships and relationships, managing developmental changes, building healthy coping skills, and promoting overall health and nutrition.

What does a typical day in adolescent PHP treatment look like?
A typical day in PHP treatment consists of 4 to 6 therapeutic groups, a daily check in with a member of staff for 90 minutes of academic instruction, lunch and individual or family sessions scheduled in accordance with the treatment plan. Adolescents typically participate in PHP for 15 to 20 days, there is a transition. Toward the end of treatment that may include a trial day in school and a return to PHP, we also recommend stepping down to our IOP program at the end of treatment for further stabilization and skill acquisition. Participation in IOP also allows the adolescent a place to process and increased support as they return to community. ilearn wellness group participate in most Massachusetts commercial insurance plans as well as managed Mass Health plans.
How long do teens stay in PHP/IOP?
Adolescents typically stay in PHP for 15 to 20 days allowing for stabilization, assessment, treatment planning, and skill acquisition. A comprehensive discharge plan is developed with the family and school and often involves a step down to IOP for increase support upon returning to the adolescence community and further skill acquisition and mastery.
How does treatment help when a child refuses school?
Partial hospitalization treatment can help adolescents with school avoidance reestablish a daily routine and develop skills for managing anxiety and returning to school. Our team collaborates with the family and school to create a transition plan, including identifying a safe person and strategies to use when challenges arise. When appropriate, the adolescent completes a trial school day and returns to PHP to process the experience and adjust the plan.
Can teens continue school while in treatment?
Teens participating in PHP will receive education services from LearnWell Academics while in program. This allows teens to continue their education and not fall behind while receiving treatment.
What is the difference between PHP and IOP for adolescents?
PHP is an alternative to inpatient hospitalization, allowing the patient to attend a full day of treatment and return home in the evening. IOP typically runs in the evening and for 3 hours per day.

The Cope Ahead group is designed to equip adolescents with the necessary knowledge and skills to manage mental health issues, while also providing them with tools to increase their safety at home and in the community. Teens will engage in daily safety training and skills planning leading to an increased likelihood of successful recovery. By engaging in the cope ahead process, adolescents can take an active role in their own recovery and form a strong alliance with their treatment team by reviewing their individual safety and skills plan.
